This week I followed Dr Andrew Digby: a conservation biologist for rare birds, Nicolas Gonzalez: a scicomm manager and member of the bird union, American Ornithological Society: a global network that aims to improve the conservation of birds, and many more people and organizations on X (Twitter).
This week I decided to tweet about owls as I haven’t decided which species I want to focus on! Owls have always intrigued me but, oddly enough, I find them more eerie now than when I was younger! I wrote about their ability to turn their heads up to 270 degrees. While this fact fascinates me, I learned that it's not really a unique ability for a bird to have, apparently red-tailed hawks can do this too.
While looking at my classmates’ posts on X I found out that arctic foxes have long lasting bonds. More specifically, my classmate Dalilah (@ucdanimals) mentioned a pair of arctic foxes that had a bond which lasted over 25 years! I also learned from my classmate Natalie (@L0velyPois), who also wrote about arctic foxes, that arctic foxes sometimes share dens with other family groups or even unfamiliar groups due to scarce den sites!
I learned interesting facts when I looked through my classmates’ blog posts as well! Similarly, I learned that foxes take years to build their dens, but not just any dens…they build multiple-chambered dens! This made me think about how dedicated animals like foxes can be. I am loving this process and learning new facts about different species’ behaviors and social skills. It’s also very interesting to see posts from different classmates about the same animals and I can’t wait to learn more about the animals my peers have chosen!
