I chose to include this tweet because, to me, it was the shortest and most "straight to the point". I also really like this image as it represents species' interactions with one another.
This week I did more research on my species’ problem: hummingbird mortality. I found that dirty bird feeders are also a cause for hummingbirds’ deaths. I found multiple sites that explained how to properly clean bird feeders, including https://www.realsimple.com/how-to-clean-a-hummingbird-feeder-7547291. I continued to research issues that I already knew about, such as window collisions, pesticide poisoning, and predators. I found that adding decals to your windows may cause hummingbirds to fly the other way, ultimately preventing a window collision.
When researching counterarguments, I found that many people believe that pesticides are more beneficial than harmful. Some argue that without pesticides, most of the plants would be lost due to pests and diseases. Hummingbird mortality is also believed to bring balance to the ecosystem. This article: https://yummingbird.com/the-role-of-hummingbirds-in-ecosystems/ mentions a concept called “predator-prey” as a counterargument to hummingbird mortality.
While looking through my classmates’ posts I found many upsetting facts. I found that many people kill crows simply because they find them annoying. A solution to this is to place scarecrows to redirect crows rather than ending with their lives. Another unsettling problem that I found was puppy mills. One of the solutions that my classmate provided was to support local shelters.
Overall, this week was eye opening and I was introduced to many new issues regarding my classmates’ chosen species as well as solutions to these issues. I look forward to reading about some of my other classmates’ problems and solutions.
